Case 06 of 18 · CINEOSIS
Hybrid pilot
What does it take to put the dummies into real archival footage?
Six passages, each putting the family into the real example clip for its sign, chosen as the hardest integration cases.
How it was made
- Fit a pinhole camera to each plate and track its moves per frame.
- Render each dummy as its own transparent layer from the plate camera, then add shadows along the plate's light.
- Cut occlusion mattes (keyed, polygon or ISNet), match grade, resolution and grain.
- Two fresh critics judge at 24 fps, one per round.
What this case teaches
- Hand-fitting every plate shows what each integration problem costs: scale, contact, occlusion, light, a moving camera.
- The result was hard: after two rounds one passage met the bar. The critics named exactly why the rest did not.
- The pilot ends with three rules for any later passage: one scale-and-contact solve per plate, real mattes, and a legibility gate before rendering.
How it differs. CINEOSIS in the bay controlled every pixel. Here the plate is fixed and the dummies must fit it.
What broke and what changed
- A rattan chair in front of Bola was a rectangle.Matte keyed to the rattan strokes only; the occlusion now holds.
- The lamp dims before her hand reaches it.Push-in on the desk, and the globe dims with the room. Still weak: cause must come before effect.
- The dummies tower over the raft crew.Larger toons, tighter crop. Still fails; this became the 85%-of-a-man scale rule.
