Case 12 of 18 · The Found Odyssey
Episode 2 · THE GUEST-GIFT
What does a flashback look like when two people remember it differently?
Episode 2, THE GUEST-GIFT: all of Book 9 told at the feast by two tellers who disagree. Five acts, each a CINEOSIS sign of the recollection-image.
How it was made
- Give each teller a style: his version a black-figure pot, Polyphemus's version the film itself, in colour.
- In the split-screen act, anything that crosses the seam changes style as it crosses.
- Two hands argue in the margins in gold and blue ink, crossing out each other's notes.
What this case teaches
- A point of view can be a visual style, and a conflict between two views can be a seam between two styles.
- Each act card names its sign, so the episode is also a lesson in five CINEOSIS signs.
- Callbacks (the hop on the name, "see Ep. 1") start the series memory.
How it differs. Episode 1 had one narrator. Episode 2 has two who contradict each other.
