Drawn tests · NOBODY, THE SIRENS, ARGOS

The first three drawn shots: figures in archive plates, Homer asked by the CALL track and answered by archive speech. Watch the film.

Production notes · The Found Odyssey, drawn: three test shots

This reel runs 1:56. It has a title card and three shots, each with its own card:

  • NOBODY, Book IX: 24 s.
  • THE SIRENS, Book XII: 33 s.
  • ARGOS, Book XVII: 50 s.

Sound (observed)

This part is about the sound. Watch with it on.

The sound in each shot is the Found Odyssey CALL track for the scene, taken from the cineosis-lab repo (lab/odyssey/found-audio/call/). In this track the studio line plays first, then the archive's spoken answer.

  • I cut out the lines and placed them with pauses of my own. I did not change the words or the order.
  • Under the answers, the captions show the source film and year for each answer.
Shot Scene Lines Archive answers from
NOBODY OD-B09-S08 9–11 Humor and Health (NIH forum, 1993) twice, then Hi Diddle Diddle
THE SIRENS OD-B12-S03 7–9 Communications and Our Town (1947), Introduction to Haiti (1942), Man On The Land (1951)
ARGOS OD-B17-S03 0–2 and 8 Mother Mack Trains Her Seven Puppies (1952), Mother Mack's Puppies Find Happy Homes (1953), Fire! Patty Learns What to Do (1951), All in One (1938)
Candidate plates Candidate archive plates laid out side by side before one was chosen for the sign or scene.

Picture (observed)

This part separates what came from the archive from what was made here.

The footage comes from clips in the cineosis-lab archive library (lab/clips/). These are not the clips the Found Odyssey picked for these lines, because those are hosted on r2.dev and this workspace could not reach them.

Drawn (generated)

This part separates what came from the archive from what was made here.

  • Characters and props: Odysseus, the two crewmen, the black-figure ship, the Sirens' vase panel, the stake, the staff and the ropes. All are original designs.
  • References: the references you sent were used only for drawing principles:
  • ink line and flat colour, with long rubber-hose limbs, from the packaging art;
  • the black-figure vase panel;
  • drawn figures that touch real footage, cast shadows on it, and are shaded to match its light, from the live-action and animation films.
  • Animation: bodies are keyed by hand in the rig (crash/m_od1.js to m_od3.js) and drawn by ody/toon.py. Lines are redrawn every second frame.
  • Mouths: Odysseus's mouth in NOBODY and the Sirens' mouths follow the loudness of the audio.
  • Generated sound: footsteps, the sea and surf beds, and a faint fire-truck wail under the Sirens' first answer.
