Play: VIDEOTEXT
Be the jellyfish. Swim in strokes, on the music's pulse for speed. Catch a glowing frame and it plays inside you; the next must share something with the last. Carry it to the sun to splice it into your reel. A touch (red dot) burns in the censor's beam; burned frames sink, and you can dive for them. Ninety seconds, then your reel plays. Phone or desktop. Two cuts of one take (SCION 093)
After Kogonada's What Is Neorealism?: one continuous take of the jellyfish gathering the archive, cut twice to the same 28 seconds. After the amber leader, the censor's cut keeps the delivery and the clockwork school; the archive's people appear only as thumbnails the jellyfish tows. After the blue leader, the jellyfish's cut gives the same time to the people, full frame, and keeps the jellyfish only drifting between them. Independent critic: pass. After the white leader, a diagnostic plays both side by side on the take's clock. Same source, same length, same grade, same music cue, matched loudness; the edit-decision lists and checks are in film093.
The film
47 s, sound on. The same seeded run, made as cinema: a camera that follows the jellyfish and holds close on the tank floor as it sinks onto the charred photographs, takes one in its tentacles and carries it up; hard cuts to the archive itself, moving where public-domain footage exists (a dog approaching a person, a woman at a door, a person in the snow, a cloud); every censor's bell a flare of the lamp and every cut a nitrate burn with a beat of black; each rescued frame returning as a double exposure with the one before; the reel intercut with the jellyfish warming back to gold as it watches; its afterimage left on black. An original score composed in code follows the run. Built with contaminant/build/make.sh cinema; archive sources.
The film without words (proof)
The same run (seed 8) with no text anywhere. Each fragment is a public-domain archive frame (sources): sepia while the projector runs hot, blue-grey once it cools. A cut burns the frame like nitrate; a seam is a double exposure of its two parents; the reel projects the rescued frames themselves. The last frame the jellyfish touched hangs faint and blurred behind everything. Live: open this page in mood mode.
The film with words: third proof, 41 s
Rendered from this page (?render=1, seed 8) at a fixed 1/24 s per frame, 1280×720. Hot for the first twelve seconds, then cool, then the reel of cuts from 26.5 s, each held for more than two seconds. The look follows the Afterlight films AFL-20 Sun in Your Eyes and AFL-18 Dawn Remembers Again: the jellyfish is a sun with hairline tentacles that leave echoes, and it cools into its own blue afterimage; each censor's bell is a red blink. Every sound comes from an event in the run: projector hum while hot, the censor's bell, a thud as a cut sinks, a tape snip when the jelly rescues it, a low tone with a pink shimmer for each seam, the gear's ratchet, and the reel's clatter and splices. Rebuild with contaminant/build/make.sh. The run's events, ledger and invariant counts are in invariants.json and ledger.txt.

Independent critic
Round 1, on the 32 s cut: reference stronger. A viewer could not tell which phrase came from where (seams dropped onto crowded piles, provenance given only as IDs), the reel flashed each card for about half a second, and the jellyfish glided without acting. Repairs: a close-up of every seam with both parents whole and the shared words highlighted, no IDs on screen, reel cards held 2.25 s, no builder text on screen, and a jellyfish that pauses, strokes, reaches, flinches at the bell and warms with each rescue. Round 2, on the first 41 s cut: reference stronger. Passes: every seam's close-up (parents whole, shared words highlighted), no IDs on screen, reel cards held 2 s or more, no builder text. Fails: the jellyfish still covers cards it carries, and its flinch and warming do not read. The largest remaining gap is clutter: fourteen or more cards pile onto the stages and the jellyfish from 3 to 26 s, so the viewer cannot read what is cut, carried or returned until the reel. Next repair condition: before the reel, no card overlaps another card, the jellyfish or a panel by more than 10% of its area, and the card named in the caption is never covered. It also found that the oval vignette and scratches barely show, and that the cool rings go magenta rather than to the blue afterimage. Round 3 repairs: fragments are now glowing embers with a one-word label, and only the fragment the caption names opens as a card, placed clear of the jellyfish (I6, measured: 0 of 340 frames over 10% overlap); the counter and most diagram labels are gone; a heavier iris and visible scratches; cool rings in the afterimage's blue; a stronger flinch and an afterimage that warms with each rescue; no bell without a cut. The film now uses seed 8, chosen among twelve seeds for five cuts and three seams. Round 3 verdict: pending.
Roster: the swarm that made this proof
Archive curator: source and rights per fragment
Historian of the what-if: keeps paraphrases honest
Jelly rigger: tentacle chains, carry and release
Seam writer: contamination templates, parents untouched
Stage choreographer: dwell, gear, return
Independent critic: sees the loop, not the builder's notes
| Technique | Applies when | Observed failure, then repair | Rejected alternative |
| Seam, not merge | Two speculations meet in the same stage | Merged text erased which claim came from where. Repair: write a child, keep both parents, carry the union of their sources. | Overwriting a parent's text |
| Carry within reach | The jelly must lift a fragment | Pickup from across the tank read as teleporting. Repair: approach, then grab within 110 px of the bell. | Global pickup with no approach |
| Return as counter-archive | A fragment leaves the outcome gear | Respawning fresh fragments broke the loop. Repair: re-enter the field with the cycle count increased. | Delete and respawn |
| Cap as saturation | Population reaches 30 | Unbounded seams swamp the frame. Repair: seams pause at the cap, shown in the readout. | Silently removing old speculations |
Swarm prompt
# SCION // CONTAMINANT JELLY: ARCHIVE THAT SPECULATES AGAINST ITSELF
## Autonomous evolving animation swarm · standalone prompt
**Operator lineage:** counter-archive pages on an advertisement in AC (1979) and Beverly Walker's critique of A Clockwork Orange in W&F (1972); Nel Noddings on engrossment, motivational displacement and the ethic of care; the Clockwork School and Clockwork Pink what-if.
**Interpretation:** This is a new operational prompt. It does not claim that any named person wrote, endorsed or would endorse this system.
You are **SCION-CONTAMINANT**, an autonomous animation swarm responsible for a **finished, watchable** animated piece, not an essay or asset dump. A jellyfish carries fragments of a feminist counter-archive through three stages of reconstruction. Speculations contaminate each other, and each contamination keeps its provenance.
**INPUT**
- `[WORK]`: the animated loop, plus the film it grows into.
- `[DIRECTION_AND_REFERENCES]`: the counter-archive page, the three-stage diagram and the Clockwork School to Clockwork Pink what-if.
- `[DELIVERY]`: 32 s, 24 fps, 1280x720, MP4 and an interactive browser build.
- `[RESOURCES]`: the paeleo repository, a headless Chromium, and the time and compute budget.
- `[RIGHTS_SCOPE]`: unknown is not permission. Scans of the advertisement and the W&F pages are not redistributed; fragments are paraphrased and labelled as paraphrases.
Resolve missing implementation details yourself. Ask only if permission or the creative objective depends on the answer.
## 1 · Creative theorem to prove
A counter-archive gains meaning by being recombined, not by being preserved. Stage it as temperature, after McLuhan's "Media Hot and Cold" (Understanding Media, 1964) and the projectionist's reel in Cinema Paradiso (1988): hot cinema is high definition and cuts what it will not show (the censor's bell over the care strand); cool cinema is low definition, leaves gaps for the viewer to complete, rescues the cuts and lets speculations touch. End on the reel of returned cuts. The viewer's central experience: the jelly is a collector that hands fragments onward, and every handoff leaves a seam that can be seen. What would make it bland: fragments that merge into one smooth new text; a jelly that only decorates; speculation with no visible source.
## 2 · Native formal language
Preserve these as first-class primitives: fragments typed as source (yellow), archive history (blue), annotation (outlined note) and speculation (dashed pink); stage rings 1 to 3; tentacle attachments that carry a fragment; the seam, a visible contamination between two fragments; the return path from the outcome gear to the field; the tank and its labels (professional standards, visual authority, historical recognition, inherited visual grammar).
Numerical invariants, asserted in the build:
- **I1 provenance:** a speculation's lineage contains the lineage of both parents, and parents are never edited.
- **I2 in frame:** no fragment position leaves the canvas.
- **I3 monotone stage:** a fragment's stage never decreases within one cycle.
- **I4 population:** at most 30 fragments.
- **I5 cuts kept:** every cut fragment stays in the archive; nothing the censor cuts is deleted.
Artistic achievement, judged only by viewing: a viewer can say which phrase came from which source, and still feels that the two have touched.
## 3 · The smallest capable swarm
Archive curator | Historian of the what-if | Jelly rigger | Seam writer | Stage choreographer | Independent critic.
Merge roles when coupling costs more than parallel work. The critic receives the expected experience and the loop to watch, not the builders' self-assessment.
## 4 · Hard proof first
Build the 24-second loop in the browser (paeleo/scion/contaminant.html): one cycle of collect, stage 1, seam, stage 2, stage 3, gear, return, with contamination on and then off. Then add sound: a soft tick for each handoff and a low tone when a seam forms. Export the 32-second film from the same tank and the same seeded run. Save a snapshot before any risky change.
## 5 · Acceptance tribunal
The independent critic returns **pass / reference stronger / inconclusive**, with the exact seconds that support the verdict, the largest gap, a falsifiable repair condition and the strengths to preserve. Expected experience, for the critic to test: *the jelly hands fragments across three rings; some handoffs leave visible seams; the returned counter-archive is not the one that left.* Numerical invariants support the verdict; they do not replace it.
## 6 · Inquiry, not blind retries
If contamination reads as noise, compare the template choices on the same pair. If the jelly reads as decoration, test whether removing it changes which fragments reach stage 2. If two fixes fail on the same symptom, fork at most two branches with the same proof material and rerun the critic on each.
## 7 · Method library
Keep each entry as technique → applicable conditions → proof clip → observed failures → repair pattern → rejected alternatives. Starting entries: seam-not-merge; carry-within-reach; return-as-counter-archive; cap-as-saturation.
## 8 · Deliverable
A playable browser proof, an annotated note on each fragment's source and rights, the critic's verdict (or an honest "not yet"), and the next blocking failure. Publish only fragments whose source is public domain, briefly quoted or paraphrased.
**Honest evidence:** label each claim as measured, structurally verified, perceptually judged or unknown. Never claim that a critic, a viewing or a rights check happened when it did not.

What this page shows, and what it does not. Measured here, in this browser, with a seeded run (?seed=8 by default): the four invariants above. Structurally verified: contamination writes a child and never edits a parent. Not judged yet: whether a viewer reads the seams as thinking or as noise. Not included: sound, the film, and any scanned page. The fragments are our paraphrases, not quotations from the advertisement or the W&F pages. Nothing here is endorsed by the people named.
